Project: Graythwaite Estate Stage 1 Works, Shore School, North Sydney

Graythwaite Estate is a place of exceptional heritage significance.  The History of Graythwaite House dates back to the early 1830’s with sections of the remaining fabric arguably the oldest remaining structures of its type in the North Sydney area. In 1915, Graythwaite was donated by the then owner Sir Thomas Gibbs, to the Government as a convalescent home for return soldiers and therefore has a direct link to the ANZAC’s.

The buildings within Graythwaite Estate were in a state of utter disrepair when Carfax won the bid for restoration works for the new owners of Graythwaite, The Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore School).
The Scope of works was to conserve, restore and adapt the 3 buildings to be used for school purposes, as follows;
  • Graythwaite House c 1833
  • The Coach House c 1882
  • The Tom O’Neil Centre c 1915
The scope also included landscaping, civil and external works such as palisade fencing, sandstone walls, pavements and formal gardens.
